Ariana DeBose is gearing up for her superhero film debut in Kraven the Hunter, an upcoming movie in Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man universe. Despite the film experiencing delays and changes during development, DeBose hints at an unexpected adventure for fans. Directed by J. C. Chandor and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Kraven the Hunter is set to hit theaters next year, with plenty of surprises in store.

During an interview with ComicBook.com, DeBose, who plays the character Calypso, offered a mysterious response to what audiences can expect from the film: “I think you should expect the unexpected.”

Kraven the Hunter tells the story of Sergei Kravinof, a Russian immigrant determined to prove himself as the world’s greatest hunter. First introduced in 1964, Kraven has since become an iconic Spider-Man villain. Calypso often appears as Kraven’s love interest, masterfully wielding magic through her potions as a voodoo priestess. The film also stars Russell Crowe, Fred Hechinger, Christopher Abbott, and Alessandro Nivola in various roles.

Moving to the big screen from her Broadway roots, DeBose’s career is flourishing. Following her participation in the 2009 So You Think You Can Dance, she had a film debut in Company in 2011. Her standout performances in Hamilton and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story garnered significant attention, leading to her involvement in Schmigadoon! and the Big Mouth spinoff Human Resources. In 2022, DeBose starred in the science fiction thriller I.S.S. and lent her talents to Disney’s 100th-anniversary celebration through the upcoming animated film, Wish. Next year, in addition to Kraven the Hunter, she will co-star in Matthew Vaughn’s film, Argylle, alongside Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, and Dua Lipa.
