Christopher Nolan claims Zack Snyder’s Watchmen was ahead of its time

  • Christopher Nolan asserts that Zack Snyder’s Watchmen was ahead of its time and brilliantly subverted the superhero genre.
  • Despite initially receiving mixed reviews, Watchmen is now considered groundbreaking in the comic book movie genre.
  • The success of Watchmen led to Snyder’s involvement in the DC universe, and he is currently working on his original project, Rebel Moon, with Netflix.

Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan, known for directing The Dark Knight and Oppenheimer, has praised Zack Snyder’s 2009 film Watchmen, calling it “ahead of its time.” Nolan lauded the adaptation of the iconic comic book for its groundbreaking approach to the superhero genre in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Nolan stated, “I’ve always believed Watchmen was ahead of its time. The idea of a superhero team, which it so brilliantly subverts, wasn’t yet a thing in movies. It would have been fascinating to see it released post-Avengers.”

Before Snyder took the helm, adapting Watchmen was seen as a near-impossible task, with directors Terry Gilliam, Darren Aronofsky, and Paul Greengrass previously attached to the project. However, following the success of 300, another comic book adaptation, Snyder eagerly took on the challenge of bringing Watchmen’s complex narrative to life.

Released in 2009, Watchmen featured a star-studded cast, including Malin Åkerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson. The film, though it initially received mixed reviews from critics, is now considered a revolutionary take on the superhero genre, especially considering the current prevalence of comic book movies in the film industry.

Fans and critics alike can’t help but wonder how Watchmen would have fared in a post-Avengers world, a question that the critically acclaimed Watchmen TV series raised as well.

The success of Watchmen propelled Snyder’s career into the DC universe with films such as Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Now, the director is working on original projects, teaming up with Netflix for his Rebel Moon saga, with the first installment, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, set to premiere on the streaming platform next month. The sequel, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, is scheduled for release on April 19, 2024.
