Dune: Part Two – More action-packed than its predecessor, says director Denis Villeneuve

  • Dune: Part Two will be a more action-packed sequel, focusing on Paul Atreides’ revenge and mythic journey.
  • Director Denis Villeneuve is shooting the entire film with IMAX cameras to capture intense action and sandworm-riding scenes.
  • The sequel will feature a larger role for Zendaya’s character, Chani, and introduce Austin Butler as the terrifying Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen.

Director Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated science fiction sequel Dune: Part Two promises to be a more action-packed adventure than the first installment. Based on Frank Herbert’s classic novel, Dune: Part Two will focus on the story’s second half, with Austin Butler joining the cast as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the primary antagonist to Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides.

“The first movie was more meditative and contemplative. We were following a young man discovering a new planet, a new culture.”, Villeneuve remarked. The follow-up, however, is set to take a more thrilling direction, stating, “The second movie… it’s more of an action film than the first part. It’s more muscular.”

To properly depict all the action, including sandworm-riding scenes, Villeneuve has decided to shoot the entire film with IMAX cameras. He claims it was “one of the most technically complex scenes I have done in my life.”

Additionally, Dune: Part Two will delve into Paul Atreides’ mythic journey of uniting with Chani, portrayed by Zendaya, and the Fremen, as he seeks vengeance against those who destroyed his family. Paul must choose between his lover and the universe’s fate while trying to avoid a disastrous future he alone can see.

Zendaya’s character Chani will receive a much larger role in the sequel. In a recent appearance at CCXP, Timothée Chalamet praised their on-screen romance, describing it as a “beautiful story” between Paul and Chani.

Chalamet said, “Me and Z hit it off right away on the first one. She said she was only there for about a week, this time, we get the full Chani effect in the movie. We get the beautiful story between Paul and Chani, we get more sandworms. It’s an epic adventure, I think you guys are all gonna love it.”

Austin Butler is set to make a terrifying entrance as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. Co-star Dave Bautista explained, “Everything about his demeanor is terrifying.”

Villeneuve also co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts for Dune: Part Two. Returning cast members include Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem. Newcomers to the Dune universe include Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Christopher Walken as Shaddam IV, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Souheila Yacoub as Shishakli, and Tim Blake Nelson in an undisclosed role.

Dune: Part Two is scheduled for release on March 1, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
