Godzilla X Kong Director Teases Toho Era Homages, Easter Eggs, and Releases New Images

  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will pay homage to various Godzilla eras, including the late-Shōwa era and Toho films, and include Easter eggs for hardcore fans.
  • The movie will feature plenty of giant battles and chaos for fans of the monster-mash genre.
  • The film will include lengthy CGI sequences where the monsters take center stage, telling their own narrative in a visual, nonverbal way.

Director Adam Wingard is returning to the MonsterVerse with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and he promises to continue showcasing his passion for the kaiju genre by paying homage to the different Godzilla eras, including Toho. In an interview with Total Film, who also revealed several new images from the movie, Wingard expressed his love for “the late-Shōwa era” and teased that there would be a “handful of Easter eggs for the hardcore fans.”

Wingard said, “One of the incredible things about Godzilla is that the character has existed in so many different tones and interpretations in the Toho films. I’m a huge fan of the whole spectrum, and I’ve always really enjoyed the late-Shōwa era. There are so many big ideas and they have such epic fun with these larger-than-life characters. In Godzilla vs. Kong, we paid homage to that epic tradition, including a handful of Easter eggs for the hardcore fans, and while I don’t want to give anything away, we definitely work in a few things for the Toho fans in the new film as well, so keep your eyes open!”

It seems that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will offer plenty for fans of the monster-mash genre to enjoy, including giant battles and chaos. Wingard is back to direct the MonsterVerse sequel following the hugely successful Godzilla vs. Kong, with the two titans expected to join forces to battle a new enemy.

In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Wingard reunites with The Guest star Dan Stevens, who plays the mysterious Tracker. Stevens describes his character as “a specialist in these creatures… If you’ve got a sick titan, Trap is your guy.” The cast also includes Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kaylee Hottle, Fala Chen, Alex Ferns, and Rachel House.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the latest installment in the ongoing MonsterVerse. The film follows the epic showdown between Godzilla and Kong in the previous movie and introduces a new adventure where the two face a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world. The film will explore the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that ties them forever to humankind.

Wingard has also discussed the extent of the monster-on-monster action in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, stating that there are lengthy CGI sequences featuring “monsters doing their thing.” He explained, “So much of the film is entirely animated CG shots; so much of it is just pure imagination. We have some sequences going up to about eight minutes long, where it’s just the monsters doing their thing, and so the movie really allows the monsters to tell their own narrative in a visual, nonverbal way.”

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set to be released on April 12, 2024.
