Jason Momoa hints at continued DC involvement after Aquaman 2, saying “There will always be a place for me”

  • Jason Momoa is confident in his future with the DC Universe after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
  • The new movie marks the end of the current DCU, making way for a reboot under new leadership.
  • In the sequel, Arthur Curry will face a powerful threat from Black Manta and explore his bond with Orm.

Jason Momoa believes he will have a role in the reboot of the DC Universe following the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. This film signals the conclusion of the current DCU era and will initiate a new direction under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran.

When David Zaslav took over as CEO of Warner Bros. and Discovery in May 2021, he sought to reboot the entire DC cinematic and television universe. By October 2022, Gunn and Safran had become co-CEOs of DC Studios, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom being one of the final projects in the previous continuity.

While many actors from the prior universe won’t be returning, some, like Xolo Mariduena and potentially Jason Momoa, may have the opportunity to reprise their roles or take on new ones. Momoa recently spoke on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon about the possibility of his return:

“I mean, this is kind of, like, the end of this DC Universe. Unless, you know… I mean, it’s… Things have happened before. So, I guess if people like. But, yeah, there’s… There’ll always be a place for me at DC.”

The sequel sees a more mature Arthur Curry, now a husband, father, and king, facing a powerful threat from Black Manta who seeks to destroy all that Arthur loves. Rather than focusing on Arthur and Mera’s relationship, this time the film explores Arthur’s bond with Orm, as they must work together to save Atlantis.

During the interview, Momoa revealed that he had also contributed to the development of the sequel’s story:

“Well, I mean, the first one was… I had a big… This is really cool because when I finished the first one, I was really pumped and I came back in and I wrote a treatment, and went in and I pitched it. And I just wanted to think of it like the idea… Because now he’s a father, he’s married, he’s the king. Like, he was a slacker in the first one. Like, he didn’t want to do anything about it. Now he’s got all these… Like, now he’s like, ‘I don’t know what to do.’ And you basically get to go on that journey with him, and you end up finding out that it’s him and his brother, and it becomes this journey that they go on, and there are differences in how they save the planet.”

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to hit theaters on December 22, 2023.
