- John Wick 5 is in development with script work already underway.
- Multiple spinoffs set in the John Wick universe are being planned.
- An anime series in the John Wick world is also being developed.
With the writers’ and actors’ strikes over, Hollywood is moving forward with major projects, and one of these projects is John Wick 5. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake announced a script for the fifth installment of the action-packed franchise is in the works. During a quarterly earnings call, he also mentioned the development of multiple spinoffs.
Drake stated, “On the Wick side we got multiple spin-offs and Wick Five. We started to work on (it) right when the writer’s strike started and we’ve gotten back to work as soon as it ended.”
While John Wick: Chapter 4 appeared to mark the end of Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of the dog-loving assassin, a fifth movie is now confirmed. Several spinoffs set in the John Wick universe are also in development, potentially including the Peacock prequel series The Continental: From the World of John Wick and the upcoming movie Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas as a vengeful assassin.
Producer Basil Iwanyk offered some insights into John Wick 5, saying, “If there is another John Wick movie, which I do believe there will be, we don’t know what it is yet, but I do believe…The next John Wick will be another book. It won’t be like six months later from John Wick 4.”
Besides John Wick 5, Ballerina, and other spinoffs, director Chad Stahelski revealed that an anime series is also in the works. He expressed excitement for the project, saying, “So we’re really looking forward to that; we’re really excited about it because we’re doing that and a Japanese anime because I love Japanese anime so much. So to create all the cool stories that anime could achieve better than we could and the TV show to expand our world, we’ll still get our fix, you know what I mean? And we’ll still have all the fun.”
John Wick: Chapter 4 received positive reviews and raked in over $440 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise. The first big screen spinoff, Ballerina, is scheduled for release on June 7, 2024.
