Loki Season 2 Finale Breaks MCU’s Post-Credits Tradition, Explained by Producer

  • There is no post-credits scene in Loki Season 2 finale, as the producers aimed for a self-contained narrative without relying on future teasers.
  • Marvel projects are shifting towards self-contained narratives, allowing for greater creative flexibility and departing from the traditional formula.
  • Tom Hiddleston hints at a possible return to the MCU, as he has bid farewell to the role multiple times in the past but received warm responses from Marvel executives.

Producer Kevin Wright recently explained the reasoning behind the absence of a typical post-credits scene in the Loki Season 2 finale. In an interview with TVLine, Wright said that they intentionally decided not to include any post-credits scenes to create a self-contained narrative, providing a sense of closure for viewers without relying on teasers for future Marvel projects.

“We didn’t write any [post-credits scenes], and we certainly didn’t shoot any. A lot of people want these things to feel like contained stories. I know some people like the bigger interconnectedness. I think that’s also sometimes becoming a hindrance to some of our stories. For us, it was story closed, that was it.”

This change reflects a broader trend of moving towards self-contained narratives in some Marvel projects, such as Secret Invasion, providing more creative flexibility and veering away from the traditional MCU formula. In the season finale, Loki weaves the timeline branches to resemble Yggdrasil – the mythical World Tree – becoming the God of Stories and guardian of the multiverse.

Tom Hiddleston Hints at Possible Return to the MCU

Tom Hiddleston, who plays the titular character, believes it is not wise to assume Loki’s story has reached a definitive end. In a recent interview, Hiddleston said that despite bidding farewell to the role multiple times in heartfelt messages to Marvel executives, he had received warm responses welcoming him back. This history of farewells and reunions makes Hiddleston cautious about making any conclusive statements regarding the end of Loki’s journey.

“It’s so hard because I’ll be completely honest with you, Brandon, I have at least twice in my life said goodbye. I’ve written to Kevin Feige and Louis de Esposito and Victoria Alonso and been like, ‘Thank you so much. It’s been like the role of a lifetime,’ and they’ve written notes back saying, ‘Come and see us anytime. You’re always part of the family. We’re always here. You’ve given us so much and tears have been shared.’ So I think I’d be unwise at this point to be conclusive about any of it.”

In the series, Jonathan Majors portrays Victor Timely, a variant of Kang the Conqueror, while Owen Wilson returns as Mobius M. Mobius. The cast also includes Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Time Variance Authority judge Ravonna Renslayer, Tara Strong as the voice of Miss Minutes, and Ke Huy Quan as OB.

All six episodes of Loki season 2 are now available for streaming on Disney+.
