- Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling to star as the parents of Danny and Debbie Ocean in the new Ocean’s Eleven film
- Prequel titled “Oceans” will be directed by Jay Roach and set in the 1960s
- Carrie Solomon takes on the task of writing the screenplay
It looks like Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will be joining forces as the parents of Danny and Debbie Ocean in the upcoming prequel to the popular Ocean’s Eleven series. Titled Oceans, the new film will be directed by Jay Roach and will be set in the 1960s. The storyline will revolve around Mr. and Mrs. Ocean teaching their children to steal from the rich and elite.
The 1960s prequel will not be without its unique twists, as Mr. and Mrs. Ocean will have their own criminal team, raising questions whether young Danny and Debbie will be part of their parents’ thieving squad. The screenplay will be written by Carrie Solomon, a relatively new writer in the industry, marking the sixth installment of the Ocean’s franchise. The original Ocean’s 11 movie was released back in 1960 and starred The Rat Pack in lead roles, with Frank Sinatra playing the iconic Danny Ocean.
Oceans will reunite Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, who have previously worked together in the movie adaptation of the Mattel doll, Barbie. Although the new Ocean’s film will not feature Greta Gerwig’s writing or directing skills, the talented duo of Robbie and Gosling will definitely add to the excitement and anticipation around this prequel. Producer Josey McNamara has promised to do justice to the franchise and is quoted saying, “I can’t really say much, but I think we’re just trying to do right by the franchise. I’m excited for people to experience it when it’s ready […] They’re wonderful together [Robbie and Gosling]. The more projects even outside of that we can have them do would be amazing.”
With Robbie and Gosling’s star power, it’s expected that Oceans will live up to the franchise’s legacy and attract fans to the theaters. The previous Ocean’s films, starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, have been successful at the box office, with the first film raking in $450.7 million worldwide. Though Ocean’s 8, which featured Sandra Bullock, did not perform as well as its predecessors, it still managed to gross a total of $298 million. As of now, there’s no official release date set for the new Oceans film.
