Pharrell Williams is set to share his life story in an unconventional biopic called Piece by Piece, which will use Lego animation to tell his story. The Focus Features film, scheduled to hit theaters on October 11, is described as “an unparalleled motion picture experience that captures the magic and brilliance of Pharrell Williams’ creative genius, one Lego brick at a time.”
Williams announced the upcoming film on his Instagram. Piece by Piece is directed by Morgan Neville, known for projects such as 20 Feet from Stardom, Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain, and Won’t You Be My Neighbor? According to Neville, Williams approached him five years ago with the idea of telling his story through Lego animation. The director expressed his excitement for the project, stating, “I can’t wait for people to see it.”
Williams praised Neville’s work on the film, calling the director a “legend.” The multi-talented creator’s influence spans music, film, and fashion. His career began in the songwriting and production duo The Neptunes, collaborating with artists like Jay-Z, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Ludacris. In 1999, he became the lead vocalist for the band N.E.R.D., and in 2006, he released his first solo album. Williams has won 13 Grammy Awards and has been nominated for two Academy Awards. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020.
Williams has also made his mark in film and television, working on projects like Netflix’s Brainchild, Dope, and Amazon’s Harlem. In 2023, he was named Louis Vuitton’s Menswear Creative Director, succeeding the late Virgil Abloh. Peter Kujawski, Chairman of Focus Features, praised Williams as a “true trailblazer” whose influence “continually reshapes global culture.”
Piece by Piece is produced by Neville and Caitrin Rogers, along with Williams, Mimi Valdés, and Shani Saxon. Jill Wilfert and Keith Malone from The Lego Group serve as executive producers. The film premieres on October 11.
