Reacher Season 2 surpasses total Season 1 viewership in only three episodes

  • Reacher Season 2 surpasses previous Prime Video shows with record-breaking status as the platform’s top title of 2023.
  • The new season amassed 1.7 billion minutes viewed in just three episodes, indicating a growing fan base since the first season.
  • Alan Ritchson has established himself as the quintessential Jack Reacher, and the series has been renewed for a third season.

Prime Video has released some impressive television shows in recent years, but Reacher is setting new records. Season 2 of the series, based on Lee Child’s novels and starring Alan Ritchson, quickly surpassed the viewership of the first season and became Prime Video’s top title of 2023.

According to TV Line, Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 revealed that Reacher Season 2 achieved 1.7 billion minutes viewed after releasing just three episodes. This number nearly equals the 1.8 billion minutes streamed across all eight episodes of the first season, demonstrating the series’ strong and growing fan base.

The second season, directed by Nick Santora and inspired by Lee Child’s “Bad Luck and Trouble,” takes a different narrative approach, focusing on a character-driven plot about Jack Reacher reuniting with former military unit partners to investigate a series of murders. In contrast, the first season centered on Reacher as a lone figure unraveling a local conspiracy.

Alan Ritchson’s portrayal of Jack Reacher is a significant part of the show’s success. Despite the challenge of taking over the role from Tom Cruise, who played the character in two films, Ritchson has quickly become the definitive version of Child’s creation. Although there has been speculation that he would make a great Batman in James Gunn’s DCU, it seems the role of Reacher will likely last for some time.

Minor complaints about the action sequences in Season 2 and the simplicity of the central mystery have not significantly affected the series, as it maintains a 94% overall Tomatometer score with Season 2 at a remarkable 97%. Reacher has already been renewed for a third season on Prime Video, and it’s likely that Ritchson’s tenure in the role will continue even further. With numerous novels to draw from, Reacher could become one of the streaming platform’s most significant successes. Season 1 and most of Season 2 are available to stream on Prime Video now.
