- The studio is considering bringing back original cast members like Neve Campbell and Patrick Dempsey for the next installment.
The Scream franchise faces an uncertain future following the dismissal of Melissa Barrera and the departure of Jenna Ortega from the seventh installment of the saga. The issues behind the scenes have been brewing for some time, putting Ghostface’s next bloody adventures at risk.
Earlier this month, news broke that Spyglass parted ways with Barrera after the actress spoke out on social media about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. According to The Holywood Reporter, the dismissal of the actress who played Sam, the new star of the franchise, happened a month ago when Barrera began to express her opinion publicly.
Things seemed not so dire until the day after Barrera’s dismissal became known, when it was confirmed that co-star Jenna Ortega would not continue either. Ortega, who has become an emblem of horror cinema for her portrayal of Tara Carpenter, reportedly left the project due to scheduling conflicts with the second season of Netflix’s Wednesday. However, the latest report indicates that Ortega’s departure actually had to do with a monetary issue, as she demanded a significant increase in her paycheck that the studio denied.
Following the revelation that neither Barrera nor Ortega would be part of the cast of the next film in the franchise, rumors began to circulate about Spyglass looking to bring back original star Neve Campbell. Campbell participated in 2022’s Scream 5 but decided not to continue in the sixth installment, also citing monetary conflicts with the studio. The studio would also like to bring back Patrick Dempsey, who joined the saga in Scream 3 as Detective Mark Kincaid. The franchise has brought back several actors from previous installments such as Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, and David Arquette.
However, the participation of these stars is not something that Scream 7 depends on, nor something that worries Spyglass head Gary Barber. A source from The Hollywood Reporter confirmed, “He didn’t need Neve, he doesn’t need Jenna.”
Scream 7 is currently being entirely rewritten, as the film was initially going to center once again on the Carpenter sisters. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, writers of the previous two installments, will work on the new story.
