Sean Gunn replacing Pedro Pascal as Wonder Woman villain in James Gunn’s DC Universe project

  • Sean Gunn is set to play Maxwell Lord in the DCU franchise.
  • James Gunn is known for working with actors he trusts, including Michael Rooker, Nathan Fillion, Sylvester Stallone, and Daniela Melchior.
  • Maxwell Lord is expected to be referenced in Superman: Legacy but may not appear as a character.

Sean Gunn, who has frequently collaborated with his brother James Gunn, has reportedly been cast as the villain Maxwell Lord in the growing DCU universe. Already involved in the universe created by his brother and Peter Safran, Sean Gunn provides the vocalizations for Weasel in Creature Commandos. It is anticipated that he will reprise this role in any future live-action project featuring the misfit group. According to a report by Deadline, Gunn has been given another on-screen role in addition to Weasel.

In James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Sean Gunn first portrayed Weasel using a motion capture suit and providing the character’s vocals. Although the character appeared to meet an early demise in the film, it was revealed in the post-credits scene that Weasel was still alive. Gunn also played the minor role of Calendar Man in the same movie. He was later announced as part of the voice cast for Creature Commandos when his brother revealed the first wave of DCU movies and shows.

According to Deadline, Sean Gunn will take on the role of Maxwell Lord, previously portrayed by Pedro Pascal in Wonder Woman 1984. While it is unknown whether Lord will make an appearance in Superman: Legacy, he “will be referenced in the background” and is expected to feature in future projects. Maxwell Lord first appeared in Justice League #1 in 1987, starting as a DC superhero group associate before becoming a villain who gained mind control powers. It is unclear whether these powers will be a part of his DCU portrayal.

James Gunn is known for working with actors he trusts and has a history of casting them in multiple projects. For example, Michael Rooker, and Nathan Fillion have appeared in every movie directed by James Gunn so far. Fillion will continue this trend by playing Green Lantern Guy Gardiner in Superman: Legacy. Recently, there have been rumors that Kurt Russell, another actor from Gunn’s Marvel movies, could join the upcoming Superman reboot, potentially playing Jor-El.

Other actors who have appeared in multiple James Gunn projects include Sylvester Stallone, Steve Agee, Mikaela Hoover, Daniela Melchior, and Jennifer Holland. In response to online criticism about casting “favoritism,” Gunn has made it clear that he works with people he trusts to deliver the best performance for a role, which sometimes includes actors he has worked with previously.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.
