Timothée Chalamet confesses initial concerns about Wonka possibly being a ‘cynical money grab’

  • Timothée Chalamet initially had doubts about the Wonka reboot, considering it a “cynical money grab.”
  • Chalamet’s portrayal of Willy Wonka is different from previous actors, with a younger and more hopeful take on the character.
  • Early reviews of Wonka are praising Chalamet’s performance, calling it his best yet and declaring the film a joy to watch from his opening song.

Timothée Chalamet, the star of the upcoming Wonka reboot, admits that he was initially skeptical about getting involved with the project, fearing that it might be a “cynical money grab.” However, his mind was changed after reading the first few pages of the script and discovering the song “Hat Full of Dreams,” which helped to claim his doubts.

Chalamet found the lyrics for “Hat Full of Dreams” to be so clever that they completely won him over. The young actor was drawn to the hopeful, ambitious, and perhaps naive portrayal of Willy Wonka in the script, a departure from the darker and more jaded versions of the character seen in previous adaptations.

In Wonka, Chalamet’s anticipated portrayal of the iconic chocolatier will mark the third time that Willy Wonka has been portrayed on screen. His performance follows in the footsteps of Gene Wilder in 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Johnny Depp in 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. While Wilder’s interpretation leaned more towards the magical, Depp’s take on the character had a darker edge, in keeping with director Tim Burton’s style.

Although Wonka will not be released in theaters until December, early reviews are already praising Chalamet’s performance in the role. Director Paul King had complete faith in the Dune actor’s singing and dancing abilities, even offering the role to Chalamet without an audition after watching some of his high school performances on YouTube.

Chalamet told GamesRadar+ that he has always loved musical theater, song and dance, and films like Gene Wilder’s original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He said that he felt very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work with a director like Paul King, who he claims you just don’t say no to.

Wonka also stars other renowned actors, including Olivia Colman, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Keegan Michael Key, and many others. The film’s trailer is available now for those eager to get a first look at Chalamet’s take on the famous character.
