As 2023 comes to a close and 2024 approaches, Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet, reclaims the top spot at the box office during the year’s final weekend, making an estimated $24 million domestically. Surprisingly, the film saw a 32.7% increase in earnings from the previous week.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom lands at No. 2 with $19.5 million, dropping only 29.6% from last week. Migration comes in at No. 3 with $17.2 million, while The Color Purple and Anyone But You take fourth and fifth place with $13 million and $9 million, respectively.
Ferrari has an eighth-place finish during its first weekend with $4 million, while Poor Things drops out of the Top 10 but still earns $2.3 million in 800 theaters. All of Us Strangers boasts the best per-theater average with $21,500, and The Teachers’ Lounge, directed by Ilker Çatak, debuts in limited release with $15,665.
While Wonka wins the final weekend, 2023 clearly belonged to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which topped both domestic and worldwide charts with an impressive $1.44 billion. The Super Mario Bros. Movie comes in second with $1.36 billion, followed by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer at No. 3 with $952 million. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Fast X round out the top five with $846 million and $705 million, respectively.
Domestically, John Wick: Chapter 4 makes it into the Top 10 with $187 million, followed closely by Sound of Freedom with $184 million. Marvel and DC have a combined four superhero films in the worldwide Top 20 for 2023, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Flash.
As the year ends, it is worth noting that Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which had been expected to outperform Barbie, finishes with only $250.3 million in earnings compared to Barbie’s staggering $1.44 billion. As we head into the new year, moviegoers can enjoy the classic New Year’s Eve film When Harry Met Sally starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.
