Zack Snyder is taking his world-building expertise to new heights with Rebel Moon, an upcoming Netflix franchise where he plans to release a prequel comic book as part of its expansive saga.

Having left DC Comics behind, Snyder has finally pieced together a narrative he has been developing for years, initially envisioned as a pitch for a Star Wars film. Although Rebel Moon features a similar plot to George Lucas’s universe, it offers a more mature and violent tone. Like Star Wars, the franchise will extend beyond cinema.

The narrative revolves around a young outcast who resides on a far-off colony within a galaxy ruled by a merciless empire. Weary of being oppressed, the inhabitants send her to find allies in order to raise an army against the regime. The first film, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, premieres on Netflix on December 22, followed by Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver on April 19, 2024. Meanwhile, fans can glean more about this universe.

Zack Snyder and Titan Comics have revealed that a four-part prequel comic book series, titled Rebel Moon: House of the Bloodaxe, will be issued on January 10, 2024. Set five years before the first movie, the prequel will concentrate on Devra and Darrian Bloodaxe, portrayed by Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher, respectively.

Rebel Moon, like Star Wars, boasts an array of crucial characters. As the main hero, Kora (played by Sofia Boutella) originates from the empire, rejects her former life, and is later tasked with obtaining allies throughout the galaxy to confront her previous group. General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), another ex-empire member, will head the rebel army, while Charlie Hunnam will portray Kai, a skilled pilot and mercenary.

Ray Fisher and Cleopatra Coleman play siblings Darrian and Devra, the warrior duo whose backstories will be featured in the comic books. Anthony Hopkins lends his voice to Jimmy, the last survivor of a race of mechanical knights, while Jena Malone portrays Harmada, a spider warrior. On the opposing side, Ed Skrein stars as Admiral Atticus Noble, leading the empire’s army and serving as second-in-command to the tyrant Regent Balisarius, played by Fra Fee.

Rebel Moon’s on-screen adventure commences on Netflix this December.
