Doug, a driver for the package delivery company IPS, and his wife Carrie, a legal secretary, live in Queens with Carrie’s irascible, demanding father, Arthur. Their best friends are another couple, Deacon and Kelly, and they also spend time with others including their nerdy friend Spence and a dog-walker, Holly, who they hired to take Arthur on walks. Carrie is quick-tempered and sometimes mean while Doug is more easy-going and tries to coast through life although his passivity and avoidance often get him into trouble. Doug and Carrie struggle to make ends meet and deal with an often-unreasonable Arthur, argue about their relationship and Doug’s eating habits and navigate a variety of outrageous situations that are often of their own making.
